Ravenscliffe High School and Sports College is a special state school for pupils from 11 to 19 years with severe and profound learning, physical and behavioural difficulties. The school is purpose-built for the young people, and the entire area is accessible for pupils using a wheelchair. The aim of Ravenscliffe is to meet the individual needs of their students and create surroundings supporting this aim.

A Changing Place that looks nothing like a disabled toilet

There are a number of specialist facilities at the school site including sensory rooms and a hydrotherapy pool. The facilities are adapted to pupils with special needs. Having a modern Changing Place was, therefore, a natural step for them. The room provides enough space for both users and carers as well as wheelchairs. They also provide sufficient space for the staff to assist the students with, e.g., transfers to a changing bed.

The finished Changing Place fully met Ravenscliffe’s expectations. They are easy to use, and they look nothing like a traditional disabled toilet. Using stylish solutions designed for people with functional impairments, it is possible to create personal hygiene suites which the users enjoy and where they feel relaxed.

The Changing Places include a Ropox Swing Wash Basin. This basin has the ability to swing towards the user which means that the user can wash their hands while still sitting on the toilet. It not only increases hygiene but also makes the user more self-reliant. The washbasin has a modern design, plenty of room for a wheelchair under the basin and allows access to the basin from several sides.

There is also a Ropox Toilet Lifter with Toilet Support Arms installed. The Toilet Lifter helps the user to get up and down from the toilet, and the Toilet Support Arms offer support to get safely seated in daily bathroom routines. These solutions contribute to better mobility and more independence for the students using the Changing Place.

Lastly, there is also a room covering overhead hoist from Guldmann in the room. The benefit of this model is that it takes up very little space, is easy to use and helps make lifting and moving processes safe, simple and comfortable for user and care staff.
