Ravenscliffe is a high school for students with profound learning, physical and behavioural difficulties. The school is purpose-built, and all areas are accessible to students with special needs. The Changing Place includes a Ropox SwingLine washbasin, a Toilet Lifter and a Guldmann GH1 Hoist.
The challenge: Creating a bathroom that supports students with complex needs
Ravenscliffe High School and Sports College is a purpose-built special school for young people aged 11 to 19 with profound learning, physical and behavioural disabilities. Every part of the school has been designed to support its students and provide an accessible learning environment.
As part of this vision, the school wanted a modern Changing Places facility that could meet a wide range of care needs while creating a welcoming and comfortable space for both students and staff.
The strategy: Designing a practical and welcoming environment
The school already offers a range of specialist facilities, including sensory rooms and a hydrotherapy pool. The Changing Places facility was designed to complement these spaces by providing a bathroom that supports daily personal care without feeling clinical or institutional.
A spacious layout allows students, carers and wheelchairs to move freely, making transfers and personal care easier while creating a calm and comfortable environment.
The solution: Flexible bathroom solutions for everyday use
The Changing Places facility includes a selection of ROPOX solutions together with a ceiling hoist from Guldmann.
A ROPOX Swing Washbasin allows users to wash their hands while remaining seated on the toilet by swinging the basin closer when needed. The design also provides generous knee clearance and easy wheelchair access from several directions.
The room is also equipped with a ROPOX Toilet Lifter and Toilet Support Arms, helping students sit down and stand up safely while providing stable support during everyday bathroom routines.
To support safe transfers throughout the room, a Guldmann ceiling hoist has been installed. The room-covering system makes lifting and moving students easier for staff while providing a safe and comfortable experience for the user.

The completed Changing Places facility provides Ravenscliffe High School with a bathroom that supports the daily needs of students while blending naturally into the school’s modern surroundings.
Instead of feeling like a traditional disabled toilet, the room offers a bright, spacious and welcoming environment where thoughtful design, accessibility and functionality come together to support both students and staff.
