An accessible kitchen that restores independence: Dorthe’s story

Cooking is now easier and more enjoyable, with comfortable access to all areas of the kitchen. It has not only improved functionality but also enhanced her independence and quality of life.

Challenge: When everyday tasks suddenly require help

When Dorthe returned home from the hospital after an operation that left her paralysed from the hip down, she was met by a kitchen that no longer worked in her new everyday life.
Neither the placement of the cabinets, the height of the worktops nor the lack of space beneath the working areas allowed her to manoeuvre her wheelchair. This meant that even the most basic daily tasks – like making a cup of tea or chopping vegetables – suddenly required help from others.
The kitchen, which had once been a natural gathering place, had become a source of frustration. It affected both her independence and her mental wellbeing at a time when everything else in her life had already been turned upside down.

“I felt like a guest in my own home, because I could use my own kitchen” says Dorthe.

Strategy: A kitchen designed around Dorthe’s needs

Dorthe quickly decided that she would not let herself be limited more than necessary. That is why she contacted a kitchen specialist working with ROPOX’s height‑adjustable and accessible solutions. Together, they reviewed her daily routines, workflows, and her wishes for both functionality and aesthetics.
The strategy was to create a kitchen where the assistive solutions were seamlessly integrated into the design, ensuring the space was safe, flexible, and visually harmonious.
The objective was clear: Dorthe should be able to cook again, move freely, and regain her independence.

“I was relieved to find that accessibility doesn’t have to come at the expense of good design” says Dorthe.

Solution: A kitchen that combines accessibility and design

The height‑adjustable solutions made it possible to create a kitchen that supported Dorthe’s needs without compromising on style. The rise‑and‑fall worktops FlexiElectric lift system gave her full access to the entire working area, and the open space underneath allowed her to move right up to the counter in her wheelchair. The height‑adjustable wall cabinets once again gave her access to every shelf.
Materials, colours and surfaces were selected together with the kitchen specialist to ensure that the room appeared modern and blended naturally with the rest of the home. At the same time, the storage solutions were designed so that everything could be reached while seated – without unnecessary lifting or overextending.

“Having the chance to bake with my grandchildren again gives me a joy I thought I had lost forever” says Dorthe.

Result: A kitchen that brings quality of life back

Today, Dorthe describes her new kitchen as a significant improvement to both her everyday life and her overall quality of life.
The new kitchen has not only given her functional independence; it has also brought back the moments she cherishes the most – baking with her grandchildren. With the height‑adjustable worktops and improved accessibility, they can once again enjoy these experiences together.
The ROPOX solution has given Dorthe a kitchen that is not only practical, but one that truly enhances her independence, wellbeing, and the small yet meaningful moments of everyday life.
