Improving Quality of Life with Accessible Design at Sønderskovhus Center

Revitalizing elder care with adaptive kitchen and bathroom solutions that enhance daily living for residents and caregivers

Located in Lystrup and originally opened in 1991, Sønderskovhus Center recently underwent a comprehensive transformation to modernize its living spaces. What were once 36 assisted living apartments and 24 skilled nursing units have now been restructured into twelve modern care units—each designed to support a comfortable, dignified lifestyle for residents and a more efficient work environment for staff.

The center has become a true community hub. It now includes a health clinic, rooms for activities and rehabilitation, a fully equipped fitness space, and a welcoming café where volunteers contribute to the vibrant daily life of residents through a range of events, programs, and social gatherings that help strengthen community bonds.

To support this updated vision for elder care, Ropox supplied a range of height-adjustable kitchen and bathroom solutions tailored to both user needs and caregiver workflows. These high-quality, accessible products improve functionality while maintaining a homely and inviting atmosphere that promotes well-being.

In the upgraded bathrooms, Ropox installed adjustable Swing Washbasins, toilet support arms, grab bars, height-adaptable shower fixtures, and ergonomic seating solutions. This thoughtful equipment allows residents to maintain as much independence as possible in their personal care routines, while also easing the physical demands placed on caregivers and supporting safer work conditions.

The kitchen and communal areas were also equipped with Ropox’s height-adjustable kitchen worktables, which make it easier for users to work at the right height—whether seated or standing. These inclusive workspaces are ideal for cooking, crafting, and other activities that promote social interaction, engagement, and meaningful daily participation.

The renovation is a strong example of how thoughtful design can create more inclusive care environments. Ropox’s accessible solutions bring freedom and functionality to everyday routines, empowering individuals to do more for themselves, while also reducing strain and injury risk for staff members working in demanding care settings.
